American Idol Season 8 Top 36 Performances

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 06:59 PM PST

Tonight, the Top 36 from the eighth season of American Idol are performing "Hits from the Billboard Hot 100."  After the votes, only three contestants will move on.  It's crazy to see the judges' panel so… full.  What do you think of seeing four judges up there?  And what do you think of Ryan Seacrest's new look?  **images coming soon**

Jackie Tohn, the 27-year-old from Silver Lake, California (audition city: New York, NY) chose to sing "A Little Less Conversation" and I was not impressed.  I thought it was a bad song choice and the delivery wasn't great to me either.  I know she tried to get some energy into it at the end but it didn't work for me.  The judges liked her performance even though the vocals weren't great.

Nashville, TN native, Ricky Braddy, (26 years old, auditioned in Louisville, KY) chose to tackle "A Song For You" and I was pleasantly surprised by how good his voice was.  It's too bad he wasn't featured more during the audition rounds because I feel less emotionally invested with him than I do with some of the other guys.  Either way, he did a really good job.

Alexis Grace (21 years old from Memphis, TN Audition: Louisville, KY) sang "Never Loved a Man" and it was really good.  Time will tell if the song choice was good enough to keep her in the competition but I really do like her a lot!

Technical issues made the start of Brent Keith's performance a little awkward but, fortunately, they got things under control so that we could see his tape reel.  The 28-year-old from Blanchester, OH (auditioned in Louisville, KY) chose to sing "Hick Town" and I'm not sure it was a good song for tonight even though I do kinda like his voice.

One of my early favorites, Stevie Wright, sang "You Belong With Me."  The 16-year-old from Phelan, California (auditioned in Phoenix, AZ) chose the song because it's young but I'm sorry, almost none of it was in tune.  I'm so sad.  She can do so much better than this!

I love 21-year-old Anoop Desai from Chapel Hill, NC (auditioned in Kansas City, MO) chose to sing "Angel of Mine" and, again, I really enjoyed it.  He had a couple pitchy moments but, overall, it was a good performance.

Casey Carlson picked "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and I think the 20 year-old from Minneapolis, MN made a mistake (audition: Kansas City, MO).  I really disliked it and I just don't understand why she chose that song.

My absolute favorite this year, 27-year-old Michael Sarver from Jasper, TX (auditioned from Phoenix, AZ) chose to sing "I Don't Want to Be" and I think it was a bad song choice.  His voice is bigger than that song :(

Ann Marie Boskovich (22 years old from Nashville, TN and auditioned in Jacksonville, FL) chose to sing "Natural Woman" and I wouldn't have picked that for her.  Her voice isn't strong enough to carry a tune this big.

Stephen Fowler performed "Rock With You" and the 26-year-old  from Beachwood, OH (auditioned in New York, NY) was really off-key to me at the beginning.  It got a little better but even the backup singers seemed to be struggling.  Again, the song choice was terrible.

The very emotional Tatiana Del Toro (24 years old from San Juan, PR and auditioned in San Francisco, CA) chose to sing "Saving All My Love For You" and it was okay.  I think this was a bad song choice but she has a good voice.  Like the judges, I was weirded out by this calmer, quieter Tatiana.

Danny Gokey won the hearts of the judges (and a lot of us at home) after he auditions just four weeks after his wife passed away.  The 28-year-old from Milwaukee, WI (auditioned in Kansas City, MO) chose to sing "Hero" and it was a decent song choice and I liked the performance a lot (especially the modulation towards the end).

Carrie Underwood Hides at Hockey Game

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 03:04 PM PST

Carrie Underwood was spotted at an Ottawa Senators game which, in itself, isn't all that surprising given the fact that she's rumored to be dating Mike Fisher

What was surprising was that she didn't seem to expect to be spotted and when she realized that cameras were focusing in on her, she tried to dive out of the way.  Too funny!

I was just sent this great slideshow from the private opening of the American Idol Experience attraction at Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios.  Again, it was a great event and looking at these pictures is a lot of fun!

Elliott Yamin’s New Single “Fight For Love”

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 08:22 AM PST

Have you heard Elliott Yamin's new single "Fight For Love"?  I really liked it elliott yamin fight for love and judging from the poll on Popeater's site, most people love it too.

Listen to it here and then come back and tell me what you think.

What I like best about it is that the tempo and feel of the song changes so many times in a way that goes along with the intent and emotion behind the lyrics.  Very clever.  The chord changes are also really nice, especially during the verse because they aren't what you're expecting (at least not for me).

American Idol Season 8 Ratings Are Down

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 08:08 AM PST

Big surprise – apparently, the ratings are down for the current season of AMERICAN IDOL: Logo 2009. CR: FOX American Idol.  The LA Times is reporting that the show has slipped 8% in total viewers in comparison with last season (which didn't have the best ratings either) and that it is also down 14% among 18 to 49 year old viewers (not good since advertisers mainly target this group).  Even worse – this is the lowest-rated season of American Idol among viewers under 50 since the first season in 2002 (and that was in the summer, a time when you'd expect lower ratings – yikes!).

I know that this extended Hollywood Week format is confusing and frustrating some people (myself included).  What do you think – has this season been more boring than the others?

Do You Care About Jessica Langseth’s DUI?

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 07:56 AM PST

I know some sites like TMZ have made some interesting comments about the jessica_langsethfact that American Idol season 8 Top 36 contestant, Jessica Langseth, got a DUI a few years ago.  She pled guilty and was sentenced to four days in jail and two years of probation (this ended earlier than expected and she completed her probation this past December).

So, do we need to know this?  I guess I understand that once you are in the public eye, this sort of stuff comes out but the girl pled guilty to the crime and successfully completed her punishment.  What can you really say about that?  Not much.

I have to admit that she hasn't really jumped out at me as a major contender for the finals but she's got a good voice.

What do you think?  Should people with criminal pasts like DUIs be excluded?

Fantasia Getting High School Diploma, Talks Foreclosure and Color Purple

Posted: 17 Feb 2009 07:47 AM PST

Fantasia Barrino has told Access Hollywood that she has decided to earn her 90208A1 high school diploma this year.  That's great!  Despite being famous, it probably feels pretty bad to not have graduated from high school.  The 24-year-old singer said: "Yep, going back to school to get my diploma.  Well of course I can't go in a school because I would probably like, start a riot , but I'm gonna get a teacher to come teach me everyday. I'm gonna get my diploma starting in maybe three weeks. So you know, it's gonna be tough, it's gonna be hard, but it's gonna be a testimony to a lot of young people and a lot of people who are in my shoes. I wanna go back to show them you can go back, it doesn't matter, never too old. Go back."

She also wanted to address all of the rumors that her home was in foreclosure because she couldn't pay for it.  Of the 1.3 million estate in North Carolina, Fantasia said: "We're still in my home. I take care of my whole family so there's no way I could [let] anybody take it," she said. "It wasn't a foreclosure, it was just somebody trying to take it away from me, but that's the industry and there's a lot of people out here, but as you can see I'm still a strong tough cookie, I got that from Miss Celie."

I'm guessing Fantasia is quite attached to the role since it looks like she will be returning to the play: "Yes, Miss Celie. [I'm] going back, end of June around my birthday time, so another birthday with Miss Celie," she said.
