Noel Gallagher Hopes Recession Gets Worse Posted: 03 Mar 2009 11:25 AM PST I don’t know about you but the recession has started to affect me personally, and it hurts more than just the bank balance. We’re in the middle of a global economic crisis and it’s likely to get worse before it gets better. While most of us hope our government rescue plans succeed and spark growth once again, one man is hoping the credit crunch gets worse. Step forward Noel Gallagher from Oasis. In an interview with That’s Shanghai, via NME, Gallagher spoke about a great many subjects, one of which, rather oddly, was the current economic situation. Not really a subject I’d grill the guitarist and lead songwriter of Oasis on personally. Asked his views on “the current economic crisis, lack of employment, national depression, and lack of opportunities” and how these issues can inspire and drive music, Gallagher replied:
He’s clearly got his tongue very deeply in his cheek with the last part of his answer, but I’m not sure that will make the people being deeply affected by this depression feel any better about his attitude. You’re losing your house, your business has gone bankrupt, and you can’t afford medical insurance but don’t worry, because “at least we'll get a few good albums out of it.” Brilliant. What Noel may be forgetting is that a worsening economy means less people will be buying albums, going to gigs, and paying extortionate prices to support their favorite artist. Noel may even have to sell one of his 27 houses.
