Radiohead Talk New Album | Band Working On Follow-Up To Controversial ‘In Rainbows’

Radiohead are, without doubt, one of the biggest groups to have emerged from the UK ever. They are unique in being a modern-day British band just as loved in the Stated as they are in their native country.

When the band released In Rainbows in 2007 they also became great innovators, being one of the first artists to try and use the power of the Internet rather than try and rally against the new ways of distributing music.

Now, Radiohead are well on the way to releasing their next album, the eagerly-awaited follow-up to In Rainbows. Back in September, Ed O'Brien revealed that many of the songs for the next release had already been written, and fellow band member Colin Greenwood has now revealed the band are in the studio recording new material.

In an interview with BBC6 Music, Greenwood said:

“We just went in last week, it was really good. It was very noisy and chaotic, and really fun. I’m very impressed with, and grateful for, our producer Nigel [Godrich] and his ability to make it all sound vaguely plausible.”

“It’s really scrapbooks. We’re at the stage where we’ve got the big Lego box out, we’ve tipped it out on the floor and we’re thinking, what next? But it’s cool, it’s just trying to get everyone excited and inspired and into it.”

Greenwood also touched briefly on the band’s current thoughts as to how the new album will be released. In Rainbows was first issued as a download where people were asked to pay what they thought the record was worth before being released on physical formats some months later. He said:

“We’ve got lots of ideas, but we won’t decide until we finish the thing. I don’t know, it is all up in the air, but it’s good. It was all up in the air last time, and that was what was exciting, it was all on the hoof.”

It always fills me with delight when I hear Radiohead are working on new material, especially when the process is described as “noisy and chaotic.” You get the feeling that the band are having fun but still producing fantastic music out of the mayhem.

As for the release method, I doubt Radiohead will go the same route as before. They’ve been there, done that, and it turns out that many people ended up paying nothing for the album so it wasn’t a huge success. Much more likely is a different method of distribution entirely but what I don’t know.
