Hip Hop’s Russell Simmons Named UN Ambassador Posted: 20 May 2009 09:52 PM PDT Russell Simmons was announced today as special Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations. Multi-millionaire Simmons, who is the founder of Def Jam Records has accepted the position to help bring awareness to modern day slavery throughout the word. Simmons joins a long list of celebrities, who include soccer player David Beckham, actress Angelina Jolie and tennis star Roger Federer. Simmons told reporters that their goal as Goodwill Ambassadors is to bring attention to the ongoing world sex trade issue and raise funds for the cause. In 2001 it was estimated that 700,000 women and children were being forced to work as sex slaves world-wide. That statistic has also been estimated to be at least a million.
