New Muse Album Tracklisting - Features Lots Of Slap Bass

Posted: 10 Jul 2009 12:58 PM PDT

The new Muse album cannot arrive quick enough for me. In the years that Muse release a new album, and it’s only every two-three years because of the sheer amount of work and refinement put into each one, it’s the musical highlight for me. I can spend months listening to the albums time after time and still hear different sounds and lyrics that suddenly stand out. The layers on each track go so deep as to almost (but not quite) be impenetrable.

Muse The Resistance

We haven’t got long to wait for the new Muse album now, as it’s due out on September 14. Muse have been working on it for months and are just now starting to reveal some details about it. The new album is to be called The Resistance, will be more classically-oriented than any Muse album before it, and will feature 11 tracks, although one is expansive enough to require being split into three parts.

‘Uprising’
‘Resistance’
‘Undisclosed Desires’
‘United States Of Eurasia (+Collateral Damage)’
‘Guiding Light’
‘Unnatural Selection’
‘MK Ultra’
‘I Belong To You (+Mon Coeur S’Ouvre A Ta Voix)’
‘Exogenesis: Symphony Part I (Overture)’
‘Exogenesis: Symphony Part II (Cross Pollination)’
‘Exogenesis Part III (Redemption)’

Muse revealed the full tracklisting of The Resistance (posted above) on their Twitter page recently. And they have now told The NME a little about how it will sound as well. Slap bass, once a staple of funk rock and which hasn’t really been heard since the 1980s on anything but the Seinfeld TV show, is due to get an airing once again. And Muse are the band bringing it out of the past and in to the present.

Chris Wolstenhome said:

"I know it's probably not ever been cool to play slap bass, but on that song (Unnatural Selection) it just seemed to work, so we kept it in."

I’m sure we can trust Muse to know what they’re doing but including a heavy dose of slap bass does sound a little, well retro. But knowing Muse, when they include it on a track it’ll suddenly sound like the coolest thing on the planet.

So it’s two months and counting until The Resistance arrives. I’m confident the new album will outshine Black Holes and Revelations, and am ever hopeful it will also outshine Absolution, surely one of the most perfect albums ever produced. What’s guaranteed is a great album which has that distinctive Muse sound while still managing to push the envelope. Which will suit me fine.
