Album Review - Ashley Tisdale “Guilty Pleasure” Posted: 11 Jul 2009 12:25 AM PDT High School Musical star, Ashley Tisdale, is branching out and trying to make a name for herself as a solo artist. While her performances as Sharpay Evans made her very popular among teens and tweens, her new image and sound suggests that she's hoping to keep her fans while attracting a slightly more mature audience. Her album, Guilty Pleasure, will be released on July 28, 2009 but I've been given an advance copy to review and I've got to say that I'm a little surprised. If I had to sum up the album with one word, it would have to be "fun." It's perfect for a summer release. You are probably already familiar with the first single "It's Alright, It's OK" but some of the other tracks that stood out to me were "Masquerade" "Hot Mess" (the guitar work is really interesting and the lyrics are cute on this one) "Tell Me Lies" and "What If." I think that the ballad "Me Without You" is really nice because she seems to relax and just focus on delivering an understated vocal which is a nice break from the over processed sound on some of the other tracks. I do have to say that not all of the songs were as easy to listen to. I think that her seemingly privileged life really works against her pity party lyrics on "How Do You Love Someone" and the harmonies are too reminiscent of her High School Musical performances. Then the lyrics on "Hair" just irritated me because it felt like she was trying too hard. If I had to make a complaint, I would have to say that her vocal styling is still a little too crisp at times (as if she's still performing on-stage) but then also gets whiny which could come off as a little self-indulgent. Bottom line, this is a decent first effort and I think that she almost succeeds at distancing herself from her Disney days. I'm sure her fans will love it while others might have to confess that the album is an appropriately titled guilty pleasure. image used with permission Post from: She Plays Music |
Flashback Friday: TLC “No Scrubs” Posted: 10 Jul 2009 02:06 PM PDT Ten years ago, TLC released their song "No Scrubs" and it quickly became a huge summer hit. The single, which was was nominated for "Record of the Year" at the 2000 Grammy Awards, was from their album FanMail which contained some other memorable tracks including "Unpretty." It was a great follow up to their debut album Ooooooohhh…On the TLC Tip and their sophomore effort (my favorite) CrazySexyCool. The song was great since, along with the Destiny's Child single "Bills, Bills, Bills", it seemed to send a message that women were no longer willing to support any men in their lives who were just trying to use them for money. Of course, there was some backlash with the most comical being the song "No Pigeons" which was released by Sporty Thievz. The group, made up of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, worked in just one more album, 3D, before tragedy struck. Lopes was killed in a car accident in Honduras before it was even released. I prefer to focus on their music since the reality makes me so sad. Enjoy "No Scrubs" and have a great weekend!
