Paula Abdul -- we need her!

Posted: 17 Jul 2009 08:00 PM PDT

Let Paula Abdul stay as American Idol judge! Kick Kara DioGuardi out please! LA Times reports that Paula Abdul may not be back in the next season of Idol.
Paula Abdul is unhappy. And unless the producers of "American Idol" change her frown to a smile soon, she'll dance like there's no tomorrow away from TV's No. 1 show.

"Very sadly, it does not appear that she's going to be back on 'Idol,' " David Sonenberg, Abdul's manager, told The Times when contacted about the judge's contract negotiations.

With auditions for the ninth season due to start Aug. 6, Sonenberg says he doesn't even have a proposal for a new contract from FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, the production companies behind the show. The new season is scheduled to premiere in January.

"I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful," he said of the contract holdup. "I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven't stepped up and said what they want to do."

Representatives for Fremantle, 19 and Fox all separately declined to comment.

What Would I Want Sky: Animal Collective

Posted: 17 Jul 2009 01:07 PM PDT

According to a Tweet from "Animal Collective's" management company, the band has cleared the first ever officially licensed Grateful Dead sample. The currently unreleased track "What Would I Want Sky" contains a sample of the Dead song "Unbroken Chain".

Here is what the band has to say:
Brian Weitz [aka Geologist]: "And 'What Would I Want Sky' is something that Dave [Portner, aka Avey Tare] wrote for Merriweather and sent Noah [Lennox, Panda Bear] and I, but we didn't have time to work on parts before we got to the studio, and then one day a week, the engineer would like to have a day off. But we would usually go into the studio anyway and work on the songs that we had never played live, and some that didn't make it on the record. 'What Would I Want Sky' is one we just never got to. We just didn't have enough time, so we worked on it in Lisbon in January. We all went to Lisbon to hang out for a week, and that's when we made a full-band version of that song."

David Portner [aka Avey Tare]: "Hopefully, we're gonna do a kind of 'Brother Sport' EP at the end of the year, with the extra tracks and maybe 'What Would I Want Sky'. I think that would be sweet."
