Simian Mobile Disco - ‘Audacity Of Huge’ Video Review

Posted: 03 Aug 2009 12:23 PM PDT

Dance isn’t my preferred genre of music. I’ve dabbled over the years, going through a phase when younger of loving the rave and house music scene. Then there are the big acts such as The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx etc. that have crossed genres and crossed over into the mainstream. And those acts I like. But Simian Mobile Disco are a new one on me.

Simian Mobile Disco Audacity Of Huge

I’ve heard of the group by name, and know that one of its members, James Ford (the other being Jas Shaw), is also a producer for the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Klaxons. But apart from that I know very little about Simian Mobile Disco. Still, I approached Audacity of Huge with an open mind and am glad I did because it is surprisingly good.

I was expecting a dance track which somehow clashed with my sensibilities for guitars and rich soundscapes. But no, Audacity of Huge delivers a straightforward, simple track which gels well with my tastes.

It sounds both retro and cutting edge all at the same time. At its heart it’s a love song, asking the simple question of how we can get as many material possessions as we like without guaranteeing we get the person we want.

Audacity of Huge is ultra-catchy, even on first listen. It also has cross-genre appeal, being just as at home being played in a club as it is on commercial radio. And it does deserve to be played because it’s an intelligently written slice of electropop which sums up one of the many and varied directions British music in currently heading in.

The video is beautifully made, and helped by the fact it’s available to watch in high-definition on YouTube. What could have been a boring concept becomes a highly watchable music video which suits the genre and the song very well. It all seems very simple, both the track and the video, but they are actually deceptively layered and work on multiple levels.

Which all adds up to a thrilling mix that deserves to do well, both commercially and critically.
