| Should Music Festivals Ban Flags? Posted: 26 Aug 2009 12:25 PM PDT Music festivals are extravaganzas of music which really need to be experienced first hand. There are hundreds of festivals each year, some big, some small, all around the world. In the U.K. we have some of the biggest and best-known. ![]() I’m thinking of Glastonbury, V, T in the Park, Reading and Leeds, The Isle of Wight, Download, and many many more besides. But one thing is in danger of ruining these music festivals, and that is people’s insistence on carrying flags in and waving them from the front of the crowd. Even at home, which is where I usually watch the aforementioned festivals from, I have become increasingly annoyed at the selfishness of people waving increasingly huge flags and banners in the crowd. And being there makes it even more of an annoyance.
This isn’t me just being a miserable old fart; this constant and growing trend for flag waving means those behind the people doing it can’t actually see the band they came to see. And paid good money to do so. Reading and Leeds, which is on this weekend coming (Aug 28-30) has banned flags for that very reason. And I wholeheartedly support the decision because the problem was getting out of hand. People sitting on other people’s shoulders may not be something that can be stopped but flag waving most certainly is. There was speculation that Glastonbury was to follow suit for next year’s festival but it now appears Michael Eavis and co. have decided against taking action. I suppose banning something wouldn’t really fit in with Glasto’s hippy image very well. So what do you think? Would you like to see flags banished from every music festival on the face of the planet? Or do you consider flags and flag waving as integral a part of the festival experience as mud and poor toilets? [Photo Source: Newscom] Post from: Brit Music Scene |
