Oasis Are Dead – Liam Gallagher Announces End Of Band

Posted: 08 Oct 2009 10:42 AM PDT

When Noel Gallagher left Oasis at the end of August it wasn’t clear what the future was for the group. People immediately assumed the band had split, with Noel being an integral part of the whole and his leaving meaning it was all over. But Liam Gallagher and the rest of the band stayed silent on the issue, leading many, me included, to wonder if they were planning to keep Oasis going, albeit without Noel.

Now, after over a month of refusing to answer the very relevant question regarding the future of Oasis, Liam has finally admitted it’s over. He made the admission in an interview with The Times newspaper in which the interviewer was told beforehand not to even ask about Oasis, Noel, or what’s going on. So it seems Liam just decided it was time to come clean.

Liam said:

"Well, Oasis is no longer. I think we all know that. So that's done. Oh, I know. Without a doubt. And it's a shame but that's life. We had a good run at it. The thing about Oasis is, no one … we ended Oasis. No one ended it for us. Which was pretty, kind of … cool. I'm thinking of what the next step is musically, which is all my mind's on."

I guess he’s right that Oasis ended the band themselves rather than falling sales or being dropped by their record company. But I wouldn’t say one of the key members leaving minutes before a gig was the best way to go about it. It was maybe the most rock ‘n’ roll way though, so that’s fitting for a band obsessed with living up to their reputation.

Noel is clearly going to take a break and then come back doing something musically, probably as a solo artist. But what of Liam? He could probably make it as a solo artist himself but his writing is nowhere near as strong as Noel’s. Still, a chart battle between the two Gallagher brothers is something worth looking forward to. My money’s on Noel all the way.
